This week on the McCort Mirror I’d like to feature a highly devoted and very loyal Crusher who goes relatively unnoticed by most of the student body. That man is Coach Santoro. Coach Santoro has been on the football coaching staff for longer than anyone on the current staff. This fall he begins his 22nd season coaching the red and gold lineman and special teams. Coach Santoro graduated from Lebanon Valley College, where he was a letter winner in football and wrestling. He earned his Masters Degree from the College of William and Mary, and his Doctorate from the University of New Hampshire in the field of Sociology. Coach Santoro is currently an Associate Professor of sociology at the University of Pitt at Johnstown

Here is a Q&A with Coach Santoro.

NM: Where did you grow up and go to high school?

CS: I grew up in South Plainfield NJ, and went to and played football at South Plainfield High school.

NM: What position did you play at in football?

CS: In high school, I played nose tackle. In college, I was an offensive guard.

NM: Why do you think other teams don’t spend as much time on special teams?

CS: I think part of the reason is that they don’t have coaches that spend a lot of time studying it. so, there is no one on the staff with knowledge of it.Also, smart head coaches understand and appreciate how important it is. I’ve been lucky to work for very smart head coaches.

NM: Has it made a big difference in the outcome of games over the years?

CS: Absolutely, we won a game against Bedford one year when we need a kick return for a touchdown and got it. our punting game kept us close in the state championship game in 2009. We also lost a game to BC because of a blocked PAT.

NM: What makes McCort football standout amongst the other great football teams in our conference?

CS: No other place is McCort. We have a respectable tradition, we have great kids who are smart and coachable. We have great coaches, parents, and teachers who deeply care about the place. That’s one of the reasons I love it.

NM: What is your greatest coaching achievement?

CS: I don’t know if I would call it my achievement, but the most memorable thing in my career was going to the state championship in 2009.

NM: Which player that you have coached stands out the most?

CS: Ryan Siwy. He is a great young man. he was a great player and long snapper. But I do have to say, I feel that this class of seniors is quite special.

NM: Who is/was your most favorite coach to coach alongside?

CS: I really don’t want to pick one. I’ve been fortunate to coach alongside great men. I’ve never seen a coach more connected with his kids like Coach Basil is. I’ve learned the most football from Coach Flyte. I’m happy to have Coach Smith back with us. All of the guys I’ve coached with over the years are my brothers. Also, I’d like to add that I’m especially grateful to Coach Bill Kory and Coach Ken Salem for giving me my break.

NM: What’s your most favorite thing about coaching lineman?

CS: I think line play is under-appreciated by most people. I like to think that we are the ones that work hard sometimes without recognition by fans.

NM: What is your favorite thing about coaching in general?

CS: The best thing about coaching is working with the kids. I like to see them develop and improve, and now I’m at the point in my life where I get to see what kind of great men these kids have become. I’d like to think that maybe I play a small part in their success.
